Bringing a new puppy or even an adult dog into your home is an exciting time! But let's be honest, the thought of accidents inside can be a little daunting. Fear not! Successful housetraining is absolutely achievable with consistency and the right approach. Here are 5 key principles to set you and your pup up for success:
1. Establish a Consistent Potty Schedule: Dogs thrive on routine. Take your puppy or new dog out frequently, especially:
First thing in the morning: After holding it all night!
Immediately after waking up from naps: Their bladder will likely be full.
Right after eating and drinking: Digestion gets things moving.
Right after playing: Ditto above.
Before bedtime: One last chance before a longer stretch.
Every 2-3 hours for puppies: Younger puppies have less bladder control.
Stick to this schedule as much as possible, even on weekends. This helps your dog understand when and where they are expected to go.
