With temperatures warming up and flowers blooming, dog owners are preparing to be out and about with their pups. Scenic park strolls, cozy cafe cuddles (where allowed!), and the constant companionship of your furry best friend are things we look forward to.
However, the urban and suburban environment presents unique challenges that require specific training to ensure your dog is a confident, well-behaved, and safe sidewalk and cafe dweller.
Forget sprawling backyards and quiet country lanes. Our dogs need to navigate busy sidewalks, crowded public spaces, and the constant stimulation of city life.
We are starting a series of posts to guide you through essential training tips to help your dog thrive in the urban (and suburban!) jungle.
The Essential City Dog Skills:
Before hitting the pavement, focus on mastering these fundamental commands and behaviors:
1. Leash Manners are Paramount: This is non-negotiable. A dog pulling on the leash in a crowded city is not only frustrating but also dangerous.
Loose-Leash Walking: Teach your dog to walk calmly by your side without pulling. Use positive reinforcement (treats, praise) when they offer slack in the leash. Practice in low-distraction environments first and gradually introduce more stimuli.
"Leave It": This command is crucial for preventing your dog from picking up potentially harmful items on the street (discarded food, glass, etc.). Practice by placing a treat on the floor and saying "Leave it." Reward them handsomely when they ignore it.

"Drop It": Similar to "Leave it," but for when your dog already has something in their mouth. Trade them a high-value treat for the unwanted item.
Start practicing these behaviors and we will discuss more essential behaviors in part 2.
